    Description:

    Christian Pietsch was born in 1984 in Naumburg/Saale (Germany) and studied chemistry at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena (Germany; 2003-2008) and accomplished his master thesis at the Eindhoven University of Technology (Netherlands) under the supervision of Prof. Ulrich S. Schubert. He continued as a PhD student in Jena working on stimuli-responsive copolymers as well as living radical polymerization techniques. During his PhD time, he spent two months at CSIRO (Melbourne, Australia), where he carried out research on RAFT polymerizations. Recently he submitted his PhD Thesis submitted titled as ''Design of Functional Polymer Architectures by RAFT Polymerization'' under the supervision of Prof. Ulrich S. Schubert. Since June 2013 he started a postdoctoral training with Prof. Felix Schacher working on stimuli-responsive membranes and block copolymer systems.

    His research efforts focus on the design and characterization of new asymmetric membrane structures from amphiphilic diblock copolymers via non-solvent induced phase separation processes (NIPS). Here, the hydrophobic block acts as matrix and the hydrophilic segment forms a stimuli-responsive layer to vary e.g. the pore size.

    He is also interested in membrane morphology characterization via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and water-flux measurements. Further, he prepares novel macromolecular materials based on block copolymers, including the synthesis of novel hydrophilic/hydrophobic diblock copolymers exhibiting stimuli-responsive behavior. As synthetic tool controlled radical polymerization techniques like atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization are used.

    Description:

    Born 29 July 1989 in Kyiv, Ukraine Iuliia got her Bachelor degree in Analytical Chemistry at the Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv in 2010. She obtained her Master degree at the faculty of High Technologies at the same university in 2012. From 2012 to 2015 she carried out her PhD work at the Laboratory of Surface Organometallic Chemistry, in Claude Bernard University of Lyon, France in the field of catalytic materials preparation. Starting January 2016 she joined the group of Prof. Schacher at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena as a postdoctoral researcher in the field of block copolymer membranes.

    Description: 

    Jessica was born in Sydney Australia in 1987. After completing a Bachelor of Science (Advanced) in Chemistry and Physics at the University of Sydney in 2008, she went on to complete her Honours Degree under the supervision of Professor Sébastien Perrier at the Key Centre for Polymers and Colloids, for which she was awarded the CRC for Polymers Prize for her original work investigating copper(0)-mediated controlled/"living" radical polymerisation of styrene in a non-polar solvent. She then completed her Doctorate in Polymer and Materials Chemistry, graduating in 2015. Her Ph.D. project focussed on the modification of materials including cellulose and silica nanoparticles using controlled radical polymerisation techniques, namely SET-LRP and RAFT. Jessica then joined the research group of Juniorprofessor Annette Andrieu-Brunsen at Technische Universität Darmstadt in November 2015 to work on mesoporous organic‒inorganic hybrid materials with tuneable ionic permselectivity, before moving on to work in the group of Prof. Schacher in October 2017.

    Description:

    Mark was born in Weimar in 1988. After receiving his A-Levels in 2007 he decided to study chemistry in Jena. During the studies he was especially interested in the chemistry of polymers. After finishing his diploma thesis in the field of interpolyelektrolyte complexes in 2013, his PhD Thesis now focuses on the controlled polymerization of different potentially zwitterionic monomers. Besides studying, Mark enjoys doing sports and reading.

    Description:

    Robert was born in Potsdam in 1986 and soon moved to Bernburg, a small town in Saxony-Anhalt, where he grew up. During his school years his interest in chemistry aroused. So after passing his A-levels in 2006 he started studying Chemistry in Jena. Besides chemistry he likes to play badminton and cook with friends.

    Functionalized PEO-based block copolymers

    We are interested in the synthesis of poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(furfuryl glycidyl ether) (PEO-b-PFGE) block copolymers of different molar mass and weight fractions. The furfuryl functionality allows Diels-Alder cycloaddition reactions for crosslinking and further functionalization. Differences in morphology are investigated using several techniques such as small and wide angle X-ray scattering or transmission electron microscopy in bulk films. One straightforward applications of such materials are robust, nanostructured and reversibly crosslinkable coatings.

    Description:

    Oliver Grimm was born in Seligenstadt in 1987 and grew up in Hainburg, a neighbor town. He went to school in Hanau (2004 - 2007) and there he got his Abitur (A-levels). At the same school he finished his apprenticeship as chemical-technical assistant after an additional year and afterwards started his bachelor studies, followed by his master studies, at the Technische Universität Darmstadt. His topic for the bachelor-thesis was "Raspberry Hybrid-Particles for scratch-resistant Lotus-Surfaces". During his master-thesis he worked on "anionic polymerization from the surface of flat substrates". Then he started his PhD studies in the group of Prof. Schacher at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena on "photo-switchable block copolymer membranes".

    Description:

    Ulrike was born in the small town Mühlhausen, which is right in the center of Germany. After finishing her Abitur in Gera, she attended a vocational school for music in Dinkelsbühl. In 2005 she began studying chemistry at the Friedrich-Schiller University in Jena and obtained her Diploma degree in the Group of Prof. W. Plass at the inorganic institute in 2010, working on inclusion complexes of vanadates and cyclodextrines. For her PhD she decided to switch to organic and macromolecular chemistry and work on polymers. Currently, she is working on biocompatible and hopefully zwitterionic polymers. In her free time she enjoys playing cello, singing, cooking, and hiking.

    Description:

    Tobias was born in Coburg in 1986. Having formed a strong interest in Chemistry during school, he decided to study "Polymer- und Kolloidchemie" (Polymer- and colloid-chemistry) at the University of Bayreuth. He obtained his bachelor degree at the Macromolecular Chemistry department (MC II) under Prof. Dr. A.H.E. Mueller, working on core-crosslinked compartmentalized cylinders (polymer micelles). After that he entered the master's degree program "Polymer Science" in Bayreuth and finished it on the topic of star-shaped core-shell colloids (under Prof. Dr. A.H.E. Mueller and Jun.-Prof. Dr. F.H. Schacher). For his PhD he moved to Jena and will continue his work in the area of colloidal particles and their aggregation behavior.

    Description:

    Moritz was born in Göttingen in 1987. After his A-Levels in Homberg/Efze and civil service he started studying chemistry at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. He finished his diploma thesis on Polymer@Fe3O4 hybrid particles in January 2014 and since then he is working as a PhD Student on core-shell hybrid materials.     The application of nanoparticles into biological systems leads to the formation of a protein corona, which influences the biocompatibility and interaction of the particles with the surrounding environment. The influence of surface charges on the corona formation will be investigated. By deprotection of the functional groups of poly(2-tert-butoxy-carbonylaminomethylacrylate) (PtBAMA), polycationic (poly(amino methylacrylate), PAAMe), polyanionic (poly(tert-butoxycarbonylaminoacrylic acid), PtBAA) or even polyzwitterionic materials (polydehydroalanine, PDhA) can be obtained.

    These materials are then used to coat the Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The influence of the different charges and molar masses on the corona formation will be determined.

    Description:

    Carsten was born in Leipzig in 1990. After obtaining his Abitur in 2009 and the basic military service, he started studying chemistry at the Friedrich-Schiller University Jena. In 2013 he finished his Bachelor thesis on naphtha-1,8-dichalkogenolato bridged models of [FeFe]-hydrogenases. During his master studies he became interested in polymer chemistry and joined the group of Felix Schacher for his master thesis in the field of controlled polymerization techniques and polyelectrolytes. After an industrial internship at Bayer HealthCare in Wuppertal, he started his PhD Thesis focussing on block copolymer micelles and Monomers for polyampholytes.

    Description:

    In 1992 Anne was born in Berlin-Charlottenburg. She grew up in Saxony and Thuringia and received her Abitur in Hessen. Due to her strong interest in natural and engineering sciences she started studying materials science at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena in 2009. During these studies she made excurses into chemistry (Bachelor thesis) and also physics (research stay). Last one took place at the King's College in London and was supervised by Prof. Dr. R. Heintzmann. Anne is now writing her master thesis as a cooperation between Jun.-Prof. Dr. F.H. Schacher and Prof. Dr. M. Sierka, examining the solubility of different dyes in block copolymer micelles both experimentally and theoretically. Besides scinece, she enjoys hiking, climbing, Skating, and alpine winter sports.

    Research:

    Theoretical and experimental approaches to examine and characterize the loading behaviour of block copolymer micelles with dyes of different solvophobicity are used and correlated. In detail, we will apply Molecule Dynamics and Dissipatice Particle Dynamics Methods  for the theoretical approach together with the software Materials Studios. Experimentally, we will synthesize poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(lactic acid) (PEO-b-PLA) diblock copolymers of different molar masses. Micelles of these polymers are formed in water as selective solvent for the PEO block and loaded with the dyes Indigotine, Nile red, and Pyrene. Systems like those are of interest for medical applications, whereas our Focus lies on the comparison between theoretical and experimental results.

    Description: 

    Thomas was born in le Mans in 1992. After getting is A-level in 2010, he decided to study Chemistry  at Université du Maine where he obtained his Bachelor degree in 2013. During his Master studies, in the same university, he chose the polymer as specialization. He joined the group of Prof. Schacher at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena for a trainig period to achieve his last year of master's degree. Currently he works on the synthesis of light-sensitive amphiphilic block copolymers for the design of smart hydrogels by Atom Transfert Radical Polmerisation (ATRP).  In his free time he likes playing basketball, badminton and juggling.

    Description:

    Veronika was born in Sumperk, Czech republic in 1993. After finishing her Abitur in 2012 she started studying Pharmacy at Charles University in Prague. In 2015 she joined Charles University Research Center for the study of toxic and protective effects of drugs on the cardiovascular system, where her task was to determine properties of salicylaldehyde isonicotinoyl hydrazone in different cell cultures. From October 2016 till January 2017 she is staying in Jena, Germany as Erasmus+ student and elaborating her master thesis on Co2+loaded block copolymer micelles in the group of Prof. Dr. Felix Schacher.

    Susanne was born in 1990 in Erfurt. After finishing her Abitur in 2009 she started studying Chemistry at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena. In 2013 she finished her Bachelor thesis on a reactivity study of catalytic hydroamination on diphenylbutadiyne by alkaline earth metal -based catalysts under supervision of Prof. Dr. M. Westerhausen. She continued studying for her master's degree in Jena while turning her interest to polymer chemistry. In march 2016 she started her master thesis on 2,5-anhydro-D-mannitol functionalized polymers and block copolymers in the group of Prof. Dr. F. H. Schacher and in collaboration with Dr. Michael Gottschaldt.

    Description:

    Hanna was born 1993 in Heidelberg and grew up in Lorsch. In 2012 she graduated from high school and started studying chemistry at Friedrich-Schiller University, Jena, Germany. In 2015 she joined the Schacher group for her final thesis on "photo switchable Copolymers" and earned her bachelor degree. In the same year she decided to enroll for the master program in Chemistry at Friedrich-Schiller University. During her master she stayed for an exchange year at the McMaster University Hamilton, ON, Canada working in the Adronov group. Recently she started her master thesis on "Synthesis and Micellization of Amphiphilic Block Copolymers with a Biodegradable Polyester Segment" in the Schacher group. Her hobbies are swimming, reading and cooking with friends.

    Description: 

    Oliver Zumann was born in Nordhausen in 1991. After obtaining his matriculation standard in 2009, he started studying chemistry at the Friedrich- Schiller-University in Jena. In 2012, he finished his bachelor thesis about mechanistical investigations on the oxidative addition of Platinum(0)-complexes on unsymmetrically substituted 1,2,4-Trithiolanes.     Description:

    Finja was born in Bad Segeberg in 1993 and grew up in Neumünster near Kiel. She attended GS Brachenfeld and finished her Abitur (A-levels) in 2012. In the same year, she started studying chemistry at the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena and is right now working on her bachelor's thesis. In her thesis, she is focusing on silica-coated iron oxide nanoparticles and on ways to graft polymers onto such surfaces. Her hobbies are ballet/jazz-dance, as well as sewing and reading criminal novels.

    Description:

    Paul Wiemuth was born in Duderstadt in 1996 and grew up in the tranquil Eichsfeld in Northern-Thuringia. After he graduated from secondary school in 2015, he started studying materials science at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. Being now in the 6th semester, he is writing his bachelor thesis in the group of Prof. Dr. Felix Schacher on "Reversible adsorption of charged molecules on core-shell hybrid materials". In addition, he is interested in a variety of sports, graphics and photo-editing and likes to spend nice evenings with his friends.

    Description:

    Abdelrahman was born in Beni Suef, Egypt, in 1984. He graduated his bachelor in Chemistry from Beni Suef University in 2006. He is especially interested in the chemistry of polymers. After finishing his master thesis in the field of interfacial polycondensation for the preparation of polyamide-based nanocomposites in 2012, his PhD Thesis now focuses on grafting from and to strategies for montmorillonite particles towards efficient filler materials for composites. Besides studying, Abdelrahman enjoys doing sports and make trips with his friends.

    Cesar was Born in Brazil in 1990 at the city of Ribeirão Preto - São Paulo, and grew up in a small city named Cravinhos where he also obtained his High School degree. In 2009 he joined the School of Engineering of Lorena, part of the University of São Paulo. After finishing his college degree, he worked at BASF - Guaratinguetá from july 2011 until july 2012 where he successfully completed an internship. He s currently living in Jena - Germany as an IAESTE Exchange Student working on polymeric membranes.

    Description: 

    Ion was born in Deba in 1986 (Spain). After studying a superior grade formative course of informatics and working in different jobs, he decided to study chemistry at the University of the Basque Country (San sebastian, Spain) in 2011. He is close to finishing his degree and developed great interest in free radical polymerization. In his free time, he enjoys playing football, basketball, swimming, snowboarding and walking in the mountains.
